Lions Australia District 201V1-4

DG Jill

District Governor 2009-10 Jill Qualtrough welcomes you to her District in Victoria.

This Lions District covers around 76 Lions, Leos and Lioness Clubs throughout metropolitan and country Victoria.

From Melbourne CBD to Robinvale in the North, to Heathcote in the East, Hopetoun in the West and the major provincial cities of Bendigo and Ballarat.

Photo above shows Jill's visit to the Maryborough Club which supports the local brach of 'Riding for the Disabled'.

The Club has donated a substantial amount to the horse drawn vehicle which caters for wheelchairs and disabled people to drive the cart under trained and safe supervision by volunteers.

Melbourne Central Leo Club Formation

LeosChristmas Pictured at left are Josh Anderson President, Tina Hosseini VP, Phillip Gao Treasurer, Ron Skeen the MD201 Youth and Community Projects Manager.

In addition to Josh and Danni becoming Leos from a YOTY background, the new Leos Club also has Louise McCarthy - a former Vic State winner of YOTY and Michael Holder who is a former Tasmanian YOTY State winner.

The new club is loosely based around students attending Melbourne University.

The idea of encouraging YOTY entrants to form similar clubs is being encouraged by the MD committees for YOTY and Leos.

Initial work is being undertaken in a number of areas around the country and we are hopeful that more clubs may be started.

Righteous Pups

Righteous PupsBendigo Lions Club sponsored a successful motion to Lions District V1-4 at its convention in October 2009.

This motion was that Lions should assist the Righteous Pups Organisation.

Righteous Pups suports the training of Austistic Assistance Dogs.

The term "autism" was first used in 1943 by Dr Leo Kanner. He published a paper about a group of children he had observed in his clinic. These children were unlike most others - withdrawn, non-verbal, with bizarre ritualistic and repetitive behaviours.

We would ask each Lions Club, when organising its financial plan for the next disbursement, to ensure the expansion of the training program for these special dogs. Through our support more children with autism will benefit from a special assistance dog.

The Environment

GreenLions Clubs are known for serving the community as well as organizing projects and activities to raise money for the community.

The Lions, officially in 1972, made a commitment to servicing the community in environmental related projects.

These projects are aimed to improve the quality of air, water and land as well as protect and preserve local flora and fauna.

Other areas that the clubs seek to assist with are recycling efforts. These projects were initiated in conformance to the Lions Policy Statement on the Human Environment.

An environmental promotional slideshow was presented at the 2009 Tooleybuc District Convention and can be viewed by clicking on the hyperlink.
